SWEATING THE BANDS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— "A Fair Wage" has, in your issuo of this morning, accused our Society of trying to sweat the Bands by offering thorn tho sum of L 4 to play at our sporta. Now, sir, tho Navala' Band played forth© last Agricultural Show two days for L8 17« Cd, or L 4 8s 9d per day, which I suppose they considered a "fair wapo." Now, if thoy consider L 4 8s 9d a *♦ fair wftgo" from n wealthy society like tho Agricultural Society, surely 8s 9d less from a young Bociety like ours, in a firsfe attompt, should not draw down on us the charge if" sweating" though, as a matter of fiict, I waa authorised to offer L 5 for the day. This offer I never made, as I was told by thoir secretary that they would not rtduco iho price from L 7 10a on any account. Again, lam iiif<>rmed on very good authority that tho Navals Band wore tho firbt to play tho *' sweater" and '' blackleg" by ploying for little or nothing simply to cut-throat the Garrison Bund. This is now recoiling on their own head-), and they are beginning to find out that they havo "cut off their nose lo spito their faces." — I am, ote, M. J. Harming, Hon. Sec. Hibernian Sports C mmittee.
