Two private coursing matches were run off to-day at Waihola Gorge. The first was between Mr Kitching's slut Esmeralda and Mr Daniel's dog Scaldings, for L5O a side, two out ot three courses to win the mntch. About* 50 persons were present. Scnldings wou easily. Scaldings wns the winner of the Puppy Stakes at Palmerston. Many Dunedin sporting men were present, and a good deal of money changed hands. There is great rejoicing at Tokomairiro as Scaldings is a locally-bred dog. The second match was between Mr J. M'Douald's Skip and Mr J. A. Duthie'a Britain, for LlO a side, which Skip won easily. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court were concluded this morning, when Robert Gardiner was sentenced to nine months' impiisonment, for larceny; Thos. George Smith to (our years', for incendiarism \ and Henry Page South to six months', for larceny. The "Star" says:— We understand that Mr Driver has been requested to stand for the- Roslyn district, in the room of Mr Burns, resigned, and that it is probable that he will consent. Mr Driver being an old and tried representative of the district, we imagine his return, in the event of his candidature, is almost certain.
