GORE. May 13.

An engine of the 4.30 train yesterday, when 5} miles north of Gore, fell into a

hole abovit 14ft. deep and 22ffc. vride, through the line being washed away. The night being very dark, the enginedriver did not notice the break until on it. The online foil through, and now lies in a dangerous position. Mr Black, of the Public Works Department, foil off as the train was falling into the hole. Amongst tho passengers on board wore Mr 11. Driver, of Dunedin, and Mr Barton, of Clinton. It is a matter for surprise that no ono was injured. Traffic will probably be suspended for two dayi, as i thero are otheE breaks on the line — one at Waipahi being 20 yards long and 16ft. ' deep. The amount of damage is not yet known. .
