(TJmnru Ilorald, Mny 11. Tho Sherwood Estate, noar the Makikihi Railway Station, in tho Waiinato County, wns submitted at auction yesterday, by Mr R. Turnbull. Tho proporty is a magnificent on a in ovjry ro'speot, consisting of low rolling downs with well-watered valleys botweon. Tho soil could not bo surpassed for gniin-growiiig purposes, and tho few wheat crops already grown on it havo boon exceptionally heavy. It comprises 6500 acres, whioh wore divided iuto farms in sizo from 51 to 327 acres. The sale was held in Messrs Miles, Arohor nnd Co. 'a new building! in Strathallan street, in^ a room 80ft. x iOft. This, during tho middle of tho day, was almost crammed with pcoplo, tho greater portion of whom woro intending buyora. Amongst them wo noticod persons from all parts of South Canterbury, as well aa from tho North of the Provincial District, and from Otago. Tho bidding, all through, was moro an ima tod than any wo have scon boforo, nnd tho oxoitomont over somo of the host sections was most intonso. OfForß ndvancod rapidly, and a porfeot mania ■corned to havo taken possession of many buyers. Nor did tho auotionoor fail to tako advantage of the land fevor, the symptoms of which wore so plainly visiblo on every face. On the contrary, ho lost no opportunity of increasing its intensity, and the result was that exceptional, not to nay moro than satisfactory, pricos wero realised.
