Thk Russians at CoNSTANTmorM:.— "Atlas," tlio writer in tho "World," is responsible for the following rather startling information: — So we owe it to the good tense of one of cea barbaret that we are not already lit war with Russia. Tho second time the English squadron, in accordance with orders received from Whitehall, proceeded to sail up the Daidanelles, the Czar and Prince Gortschakoff telegraphed to tho Grand Duke Nicholas forthwith to enter Constantinople. Tho Grand Duke, however, knowing the condition of his army, and the emeute which its appearance in the Turkish capital would excite, took upon himself the responsibility of disregarding the Imperial order.
Prince Bismarck and his Master.— "Atlas" says: "I hoar from Berlin that Prince Bismarck and his Imperial and Royal Master do not quite hit it off on the Eastern Question. Kaiser Wilhehn is completely absorbed by his attachment to the Emperor of All tho Russias, for whom he has just testified his affection in a very practical shapo, by making him a present of a nundred Krupp guns, a trifle in tho way of surplus artillery which he happened to have on his hands. As for the German Chancellor, he is England's very good friend ; buthe has been heard to remark that tho Turk is dead in Europe, and that tho future of Bulgaria will prove a hard nut to crack."
Collapse of a Coal-pit. — Wo learn from the "Tuapeka Times" that on Monday afternoon Measri Gunn and Spenco's coalpit at Lawronco completely subsided. The shaft has been giving way more or less for the past two years, but no immediate danger was apprehended until withio the past few days, when tho timbers gavo warning of the coming catastrophe, which took place at tho time stated. The whole of tho plant, consisting of trucks, tramways, turning-tables, tec, was buried in tho pit. Although tho seam of coal the company havo been working in the direction of the old face was pretty well exhausted, they calculate that through tho subsidence they will lose at least 2000 tons of lignite, besides their actual present loss of L4OO or L5OO. They intend at once commencing to sink a new shaft. This work they anticipate accomplishing in eight or ten wecka.
