OAMARU WATERWORKS.
The following Jopott wni read nnd adopted at ln>-t night's meeting of the Municipal Council : — Your Committee beg to report that they visited the Waterwoi ks during the past week, and find tho works in nil respects progressing satisfactorily. The workmanship appears to bo good, and the material used for bridges, aqueducts, &c, excellent. Fivo miles of the race, down to tho Awamoko, are, with tho exception of tho planking and pitching of a small aqueduct, entirely completed, nnd by the Ist June tho water will bo turned into this and discharge into the Awamoko Ilivor. The settling pond is a most satisfactory piece of work, and in addition to tho supply from tho intake, which will bo much more than adequate to meet all requirements, channels have boon cut by which water can, if required, be taken from higher up the river, while also a crook of oxcellent water has been brought in. Thoro is no doubt whatever that under any and all possible circumstances tho present works will furnish an ample supply for all tho requirements of a population of 90,00) souls. Your Committee learn from the Engineer that lower down tho work is nearly finished for two miles past tho Awamoko, and fair progress is being mado with the tunnels, The 11 -chain tunnel is completed, and a considerable proportion of tho tunnels are pierced ; thoro boing altogether 69i chains of tunnelling completed out of a total of 128} chains, leaving rather more than half the work still to be done. There is, however, now a much larger staff of workmen employed, and more rapid progress may bo looked for than hitherto. Steps are also in progress for an early commencement of the works at tho reservoir. Your Committee have inquired into the matter of extras, and havo to report that these will not exceed the allowance contemplated iv the financial report already before tho Council, and that all matters of this sort are adjusted as each progiess payment is inado leaving no arrears to be mot at tho completion of tho contract. Altogether your Committeo havo groat pleisuio in stating, that in their opinion the works generally are going on satisfactorily. W. J.
