WELLINGTON. May 9.
At Pnlmerston North a fire broke out nt 2 o'clock this morning. Phillip's store was totally consumed. The want of an engine was much felt; if there had been one muclt, property would have been snvud. The stove and a valuable- stock were lost besides nn adjoining building used as a <l\velling-hou«e. The total loss is estimated at L 3,000. The buildings were insuieci in the Victoria for L5OO half ninsured ; stock, LBOO \\\ the United, of which Li3sB was re-insured in tho New Zealand Compnny. Colonel Whitmore, the Hon. Mr Fisher, Colonel Header, and (jnptiin Johnston, inspected the Harbor this afternoon, with a \iewot deciding where to place battciies for defensive purposes. Tlie general impression wan, that instead of placing all of their Artillery nt the Heads it would be better to have one battery of threo guns on Ward's Island, which commands the entrance to the Hjada as well as the anchorage, and another either at Point Jormingbam or at Pipitoa Point.
