Eahly Closing.— Wo have received a letter en this subject from a correspondent, signing himself " Oddfellow," but think wo best servo tho object ho has in view by withholding it from publication.
Tub Northern Hotel. — Wo loam on good Authority that this long established hostelry is shortly to bo pulled down, and a largo and handsome edifice erected on ita site. It is said the now hotel will bo tho , largest in Oamaru.
Waitaki Bridoe Trvfkic.— By-law3 and regulations tor the Waitaki and Ashburton bridges appear in the " ({a/otto" of tlio 2nd insfc., among which we find tho following : "Traction engines, or engines employed in ngriculturo or flax-dressing, or any other purpose, will not bo permitted on tho bridgo otherwise than on tho goods waggons in uso on the railways.
The Sherwood Estate. — Tho hour of sale of tho Sherwood Estate, to bo offered on Friday, at Messrs Miles, Archer, and Co. 'a stores, Tiiimru, uiulor tho hammer of Messrs Milca, llussall, and Co., has, in eonac(]uonco of tho nunibor of lota to bo submitted, been nltored from 1 p.m., as previously advertised until 11 a.m.
Oamahu Chris i vs.— Tho mombors of this troupe mot for rehearsal at tho Masonic Hall last night, and had a very successful practice. Subsequently a mealing M'fts hold, nt which the programino for the forthcoming entertainment (to take place in tho course of a couplo of mnnthn) was finally arranged, and several othor matters attended to. From tho known abilities of tho gentlemen composing tho present company, wo* look forward with conlidonco to something really good.
Thr Thief Pest.— At -last ono of the gantry, who have, for tho last fow weeks, bcumflo busily employed "lifting" tho property of others, has fallen in tho jaws of tho avonger. Tho ffollow, Griffin Green by nnmo, is well known to tho police, and no doubt ho is ono upon whom their friendly oyo has more than once rested, during tho lato outcry. It ia a pity thoro is no fund hero out of which a reward might bo given to tho lad Ward for his praiseworthy conduct in giving chaso to tho tliiof and raising tho alarm.
Couhsino Accidents.— We aro informed that at tho recent coursing meeting at Dually Paik, a similar accident occurred to that which happened lnnfc year, a braco of dogs com sing over a cliff and being killed by the fall. Wo also learn that on Saturday morning a greyhound belonging to Mr H. H. Cousins was accidentally killed. It appears that tho dog in question waa out for oxerciso in the leash with another, when a liafo got up, and tho dogs broke away coupled together, and in dashing through a fence tho ono belonging to our townsman had his heck brokoii. ' ' ' ' '

Criticisms were indulged in by tho members, and gonorally tho essay was favorably lccoived. Next Monday Mr \V. H. Oottrcll' will read a impor on' " Friondship."
A GninvANCß. — A letter appears in another column, drawing attention to what is cortainly n nuisance of a vory aggravated order. The w'ritpr complains that tho system of w* ing of ouv public streets and vacant lots for training groiuvh for horses is dangorous to jjassora by, and slifmld bd jmt down. Wo have ouriolvoi noticed moro than onco what our coruittpondciil uoiupLuna of, and fully
intended directing attention to it when, in our opinion, thoro wore any indications of danger obsorvablo. Wo can now no longer hesitato in protesting against the practice, aftor the somowhat lively, but, wo aro assured, truthful description, given by our correspondent of what he saw ; and wo trust that the propor authorities will at once do their best to put an end to what has at last bocomo to much to bo put up Vith.

Mr Ballanco : — "There is no foundation whatever for the report alluded to.' 1
CoiißSlNO.— Wo aro' indobtocl to Mr W. H. Ronayno for tho following pedigree of Camolia, tho winnor of tho All- Aged Stakes, at tho Bushy Park coursing meeting of tho Metropolitan Club :— Camolm was whelped in December, 1875, and is by lted Kail out of Dauntless. Red Kail (imported) by Cauld Kail out of Teeswater by Bonus out of Lady Stormont. Red Kail is tho sir© of many winners,, notably Vandyke, tho Pope, Robina, tho Fawn, Dnoheas, Maid of Stowoll, Lady Vandyke, and Maid of Florence. Dauntless by Fly, by Rattler (imported), out of Bess (imported) out of Florence, by Black Hawk (imported), out of Hag (imported). Dauntless is full sister to the lato ronowned Veno, and of tho same litter for one of which Ll5O was publicly offered and refused — this being tho highest price ever offered for a dog in Australia. Camelia is, therefore, evidently of an aristrocratic race, and has proved horself worthy of her ancestry.
Oamaru Stone Company.— A mealing of Directors of the Oamaru Stone Company was hold in Mr Snmptor's offices last evenings Present, — Messrs Gibbs (Chairman), Humphrey, Sumptor, Spencer, Dr Garland, and J. Booth (Acting Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read ami confirmed.
