NORTH OTAGO BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
The usual monthly meeting of Committeo,toolc placo last evening, at the Sectary's office. Present — Messrs Fleming, Presulont (in the chair), Ronanye, Grconflold, Milligan, and tlio Secretaiy. The minutes of last monthly meeting, and of a special meeting, wore road and confirmed, and the outward and inward correspondence was read. Mr and Mrs Hesketh were appointed Master and Matron of the Society's Home on the terms agreed to by resolution at last monthly meeting. A telegram from the Colonial Secretary's office was road, stating that it was proposed to appoint some person to sue for and obtain payment of rents of immigrants cottages for the Benevolent Institution, and asking if it would bo convenient to appoint the secratary or president. The Secrotary reported that after consulting the President aud late President, he had telegraphed recommending the appointment of secretary. ! This action was approved of. * The Visiting Committee's Roport wu road and adopted, except as regards certain recommendations with regard to the Homo, which wero roforrod to the Visiting Committee with power to act. Tlio Secrotary was directed to writo to the Collector, Mr Richmond, asking him to send in a roport in timo for oach monthly mooting, of all moneys recoivod during tho month, and showing all rents in arrears. Also to Mr Hosketh, request ing a monthly statoment of all registry fees, maintenance moneys, &c. The B.irrack-mastor's report was read and received We note in it that 21 domestic servants had beon admitted into the Home during tho month, all of whom, with ono exception, had obtained excellent situations. The application* for domestic servants, ospecially from the country, are far almvo the number the Institution can supply, and servants arc at present required for good situations. A letter from the Colonial Secretary was road, nd vising tho pa> merit to the credit of the Society of subsidy to the amount of L 157 18s 3d. : Also fiom tho same, declining to nfuud money expended by the Society for the relief of the family of Mr M'Lcod, an invalid immigrant. The following letter was also read :— Cfenoral Crown Lands Office, "Wellington, April ' 2 Hh, IS7B. Sir,— l have the honor, by direction of
the Honorable Ministor of Lands, to ackowledgo the receipt of your lottor of tho Bth instant, applying that Block XXXII., Town of Oamaru, together with tho Immigration Barracks and adjoining grounds may bo generally handed over to the North Otago Benevolent Society. In reply, I have to inform yon that it hrs been found inconvenient to vest the administration of Public Reserves in persons who arc unincorporated, and pending tho Society obtaining ft Bill during tho next session of theOenoral Assombly making it a corporate body, tho necessary authority will bo obtainod from the Governor to onablo tho chairman to sue for, and obtain payment of tho rents of the land and buildings in question. — I have, &c, B. J. B. Elliott. It was resolved that n Bill be prepared for the incorporation of the Society, failing a general Bill being brought In by the Government. A vote of thanks to the chair ter-, initiated the meeting.
