Tho Govornor leaves for Wellington on Wodnosday per llinenioa. Tho fiovernor presided at tho inaugural meeting of the Auckland Young Men's Christian Association. In his opening address he said ho desired, whon tho opportunity oftb^cd, to ovince his appreciation of associations such as the ono in connection with which tho present mooting was held. He considered that the character and progress of a nation always greatly depended upon tho education, character, and nociiil condition of itsH inhabitants. Ho referred to the spread

of knowledge and increased facilities of education for the young, and said that unfortunately in these days sectarian differences prevented th« association of secular and religious education in the public schools of the country wnich are supplied by tho State. It had been found impossible to conduct religious education in tho public schools so as to moot the views of tho various religious bodies, and thoreforo it was most ossential that in every Christian country religious education should be available for its youth. Flo advocated tho formation of associations such as tho Auckland Young Men's Christian Association, and considered they wero tho best means of preventing tho sproad of drunkenness.
