SPORTING. METROPOLITAN COURSING CLUB OF OTAGO.
Wo had made arrangements for a telegraphic report of tho Grst day's events, but wore disappointed, and tho Press Agency, greatly to our annoyance, also failed to send us a word about the meeting. Wo are therefore indebted to the " Daily Times" for the first day's results :—: — Palaierstok, May 3. The inaugural meeting of tho above Olub was held at Palmerston to-day, at Bushy Park, tho property of Mr Rich. The number of entries was largo ; '20 in tho All- Acted Stakes, and 30 in the Puppy Stakes. To-day's coursing was scarcoly as satisfactory as might bo wished for, owing, in a great measure, to tho lack of system in the management of tho boating and in the placing of tho field. Tho meet was at the Railway crossing a short distance out of Palmorston. At On. in. we triod some turnip fields on the flat, but failed to got a slip ; thence wo proceeded down tho Shng Valley, and although hares wore pretty numorous. we wore unfortunate, only getting two slips, one resulting in .an undecided course, and the other in a '• no course." Wo' then moved onto Bushy Park, the property of Mr F. D. Rich, and tho chief stronghold of the Club, whero wo managed to got through tho first roiind of tho All-aged, but illluck scorned to follow us everywhere, for when Thota and Lord Palmcraton wore put into the slips for die second time the havo ran straight for tho sea, and within 50 ya.rdq of where Chimney Sweep and Pharisoe mot with such an .untimely end at the first meeting last year. The same
Bad programmo was gone through to-day, both of tho dogs and the haro going ovor the cliff and being killed inaaantly. Tho training form shown this year was undoubtely superior to last season, but still there is room for improvement. About 300 persons wore present, among thorn a good sprinkling of the fair sox. The greyhounds that distinguished themselves most were Violet, Walk, Bella (the winner at tho first meeting last year), and St. Bees. Tho tvfo latter meet to-morrow in the ties, whou a gallant struggle may bo anticipated. Appended is the result: — All-Aged Stakes—For 32 Greyhounds at L 3 each, with LlO added by tho Club.
