NEWS FROM THE NORTH.

By the Lady Bird, which arrived in Lyttelton from the North on 20th, there are Auckland papers to the 13th instant. The only item of interest is a rumoured outbreak of the Natives near Tauranga, and some fresh outrages committed by the escaped prisoners. From Wellington files are to the 18th ult. The Provincial Council has been dissolved. Dr Featherstone come* forward for re-election as Superintendent, and is opposed by Mr C. Borlase. From Wanganui the news comes down to the 16th ult., and is contained in the following from a correspondent of the "New Zealand Advertiser": — "I send you the enclosed authentic intelligence, which reached town this morning at 5 a.m. The friendly and King Maories up the river commenced fighting on Tuesday. The place w about five miles above Hanana, where they each have fortified pns about three miles apart ; they are managing in proper .military style, with out-lying p-ckets, skirmishers, &c. The day before the engagement commenced, our friendly Maories captured four spies who were watching about their quarters ; they were sent back to tin ir own people. The engagement at present supposed to be going, on, partakes more of the character of a skirmish than a pitched battle. Two of the enemy are reported killed. Tbe first blow was struck by the enemy, by firing two shots at a sentry.

WANGANUI. A detachment of the 14th was sent up the river as far ns K.-.Iwiiiki, Wanganni; they are to occupy a redoubt, to be built by them on Mount Trnfford. A detachment of the 57th went into town and pitched their tents outside of the town, above the Colonial Hospital. The two troops of Cavalry Volunteers left town, the Wanganui troop for Maxwell's and the Alexandra troop to Fordell, •v\here they are to he stationed. On Sunday evening, the house of Mr Kidd, at ttie Kai Iwi Mission Station, was visited, by Maories, who helped themselves to food, and ripped up some chairs, probably in search of money.
