TIMARU RACES.
The weather was not favorable for the Tiraaru Races on either of the two first days, 21st and 22nd, but, notwithstanding this, we learn from the " Herald, " that the meeting was a complete success. Wednesday afternoon turned out fine, and Thursday, the day of the steeplechase, entirely so. The Dbbbt— Mr Harris' Sfcormbird, 1st ; Mr Oakes' Egremont, 2nd. THE Queen's PLATE— Mr Harris' Stormbird, 1st; Mr Brown's Hatter, 2nd ; Mr Leach's Viscount, 3rd. The Handicap Sweepstake- Mr Harris' Merrylegs, 1st ; Mr Thompson's Lady Ellen. 2nd. Hack Rage — "Won by a Maori Horse. Selling Stakes— Mr McELinley's Blink Bonny, 1st ; Mr Ray's Chance, 2nd. On Thursday the Steeplechase, being the first ever seen in Timaru, created a great deal of excitement ; and the clay proving everything that could be wished, a great number of spectators were assembled on u.11 the available spots for obtaining a good view of the race. The course consisted of grass and arable land, and was over about three miles of fair hunting country, and having about seventeen or eighteen fences, some of them of rather formidable appearance. The stakes run for were 100 sovs., added to a sweepstakes of 10 bovs., h.f., weight list, lOlbi. Entrance £5 ; and the result — Mr Evans' Bed Rover, aged, 1st; Mr Thompion'i Camel, aged, 2nd.
The Dunstan and Manuherikia Race Meeting, ■which lasted three days, included a large number of races, and vra9 attended by crowds every day ; it is described also as having been a decided success.
