(To the Editor of the Oamabtt Times.)
Sib, —I regret in any way to find fault with your wellconducted paper, but am compelled to draw your attention to an anomaly which occurred in your last week's issue, In the report of a meeting held in the Court house on Tuesday last, you evidently made it appear that the question asking for explanation of the following clause in the proclamation issued by his Honor the Superintendent—viz., "that the Provincial Government of Otago hereby undertakes to repay to purchasers the tax of 2s per acre imposed by the Waste Lands Act No. 2, 1863, in respect of all lands which, between the 4th day of January, J 865, and the 4th of April, 1865, may be purchased under the provisions of the Waste Lands Acts," was of no importance, and yet considered the topic of sufficient interest to demand notice in a leading article. As the Lands Acts here are generally enveloped in misty obscurity, I think any elucidation, however slight, given by any member of the Government, surely ought to find a place in the columns of a newspaper. Yours, &c, G. SUMPTEB. December 31, 1864. [Had we reported the Whole discussion which took place at the meeting referred to, it would have occupied too much space. Mr Miller was understood to say, in reply to questions put by Mr Sumpter, that he considered the proclamation preliminary to a repeal of the tax altogether.—Ed. O. T.]
