MEETING OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
November 17th, 1864. Present-—Mesers Ashcroft (in the chair), "Waddell, giam, Gibbs, Smith, and Grenfell. The minutes of the previous meeting having been ,nioved, letters were read from Messrs Miller, M.P.0., & Hislop, Secretary to the Educational Board.
In reference to Mr Miller's letter as to tho Educajjial Reserves, it was
.Moved by Mr Gibbs, seconded by Mr Smith—" That ■t Clerk be requested to reply to the letter from J. flier, Esq., in regard to the Educational Reserves, that c Committee feel that it is useless to attempt leasing It lands for bo short a period as thi-ee years, without ;»er to introduce some clause in the leases to secure [t lessees against loss in case the leases ehotild not be newed; and they therefore must decline taking any ■tion in regard to them until a conclusion can be arred at with regard to this point. Also, to ask whether ii tho intention of his Honor to give the Local Comittee the management of these reserves when the ne,savy powers are obtained as to leasing them." Carried nammously.
lit , Hislop's letter, after approving generally of the mimittee's proceedings, stated that he would recomend the Geneial Board at next sitting to sanction the ipointment of a female teacher, and to give £50 yearly rards her salary, on condition that the School Oomltteo should contribute an equal sum ; and that he was i confident of the Board's approval, he felt at liberty ,recommend the Commitee to proceed in the matter. It was pioposed by' Mr Waddell, seconded by Mr igram— 1. That the Clerk be requested to reply to eletler of tho Secretary to the General Board of 11th o\ember, thanking him for his prompt and satisfacry lesponse to their application with regard to tho Dployment of a female assistant teacher, ard to state at the Committee accept the offer of assistance, and iiuest the aid of the Secietaryin finding a suitable rson. «2. That an advertisement be inserted three aies in the Oamaru Times, and also three times in one unedin and one Chrtetchurch paner, inviting applicam for the appointment, and stating the salary to be [00 per annum ; and requesting each applicant to prent her full testimonials to the Committee, on or before c 20fch December." Carried unanimously.
A draft of a circular was given in by the Visiting jmmittee, to be sent to ratepayers and others, soliting voluntary subscriptions for tho expenses of the tool It was moved by Mr Smith, seconded by Mr Gibbs— That the circular proposed by the Sub-Committee be iproved, and that the Clerk be directed to have the mc printed, and thereafter transmit it to all the irtiee on the assessment-roll of last year, and other siJeiits in the district liable to be rated, under the ipevintendeuce of the Visiting Committee, and to re)rt to a Committee meeting to be held on the 22nd of lecember." Carried unanimously. Xotice of motion for next meeting was given by Mr igram, seconded by Mr Smith--" That tho fees of last tr be adopted as the scale of school fees for the curntterm, viz., 7s. Cd., 10s., a"d 12s. Gd." Notice of amendment to said motion was given by Mr renfell, seconded by Mr Waddell—" That the fees bo ■» same as the original, at the opening of the school, as r handbill, viz., 55., 7s. 6d , and 10s/' The meeting adjourned until Thursday, 22nd Decempr, at 7 p.m.
