COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE. Oamaru Times Office, Wednesday Evening.
The grain and produce m.ukets continue peifectly st- a<ly, and thtie is. no change of quotations in puces tins week Ouj inpoib? and expoit-sue of the imml uiiicdlaneoTis descnptiou. full htockb of all lands of commodities aie on hand.
AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL.— We look foiward with just uiteicst to the foithcoming Agiicultural ( aucl Pastoial Society's Exhibition, as encouraging ■wholesome emulation, not only among the breeders of stock but among the growem of produce. With not lebs interest do we look forward to the result of o\ir next harvest ; indeed, we aie disposed to tliink that the latter is of the greater importance of the two, at this paiticular time The Pa&toial leputation of the district is already established, its Agucultuial but newly begun. So far aa the present season has gone we have been wondei fully favoied with genial lains, which have brought on the crops in some instances almost too luxuriantly. Pasture for flocks and cattle has bopn most abundant. "We hear of some instances of losses of lambs from the late lahis, but the most of the Inmbing having then been over, the looses, we believe, have not been heavy. Stock will now mpidly improve in condition, which is much needed, judging fiom the sheep that have been killed by butchers for some time past. The butchers, however, do not appear to complain of the want of stock, as they have lowered their prices heiv, ■while in several other parts of the province meat has risen. We look forward to the time as not a very distant one, when this district will gi ow and grind all its own wheat, as well as be fully equal to the supply of stock for its own population. DT7NEDIN TRADE REPORT.— Bu&iness since our last report haa undeigone a decided improvement. Many orders have come forward f 1 om the intei ior, and it is to be hoped that a good spring trad© will be transacted. Tn llour there is very little doing. Holders of Adelaide ask L31, and Chilian may be quoted at L28, but buyers look for a ) eduction, which must soon take place. There is a good demand for bacon and hams, at full prices. The demand for Cork butter is at present very limited, £>nd stocks being large, several lots have been forced on the market, at great loss to the importer. Prices have declined to from 8d to lOdper lb., but such cannot long continue, as importers must thus be making a loss of 2d to 3d per lb. Colonial is in more demand, jwod nood parcels realise Is to Is 2d per lb. Caudles
have slightly declined in price. There is but little demand for light weights, and full weights are slow of sale, even at the price quoted. Tennant'B and Prestonpans ale are still very scarce. These at present are the favorite brands, and realise a good price— say 12* to 13i.--Witness.— The week's business has closed without the activity which characterised its commencement ; but m no article we can mention have piicen 10trograded, while in some an advance has taken place. Imports have been small from nil quarters ; of foreign arrivals we Irive none to chronicle. By tho Albion, which ai rived on 27th ult. from Melbourne, wo have intelligence to the 22nd instant. The "Argus" says:— " There are no signs of impiovement apparent to day in the impoit market, and operations have been extremely scanty Iloldeis of Adelaide flour ask higher puces, and L25 for best qualities is now the cun ent quotation." — Times. INVEROAKGILL.— Tho " Daily News" of the 27th ult. leports :- "Tho markets are without change. The biig Aiaim is at tho New River Heads, with a cargo of coal, which wo undci stand is the first consignment to a company in town, whose intention it is to feupply this article of fuel at a model a to late." DALGETY AND CO.'s WOOL CIRCULAR.— London, August 25, 1864.— " The public wool sales, the opening of which wo announced on tho 25th ult., aio now di awing to a close — tho conclusion being fixed for the 31st instant. The quantities catalogued are as follows : Victorian ... ... 42,099 Australian . . .. 26,427 Tasmanian . ... 11,484 South Austialian ... 8,104 Now Zealand ... ... 20,218 Swan River ... .. 352 Total . . . 109,284 of which but a &mall pioportion has been withdi awn, pnd the remainder has parsed the hammei. Tho avei.ige latcs of puces of this s,eues must bo taken as about a penny below May lates. The f.iulty condition of many New South Wales wools, f i om but r and seeds, has excited geneial remaik among the buyers, ami has in some instances pi evented their being taken foi foieigc account. Although the expectations of last month have not been fully icalised, yet the Jesuit to gioweib, especially undei tho cueum&tances of a veiy laige supply and a very high rate of inteiest, must bo considered batisf.ictoi y ; and the absenco of speculation favois the expectation of steadiness m the maiket duung tho leinaindei of tho year."
