Mr Ashcroft, before the conclusion of the proceedings, took the opportunity to bring before the meeting the reply which had been sent to him fron his Honor the Superintendent to a memorial forwarded to him recently by a public meeting through the committee appointed by that meeting. This reply (which will be found in outleading columns^) he read to the meeting, and it was received with cheers. He said he had submitted it to the Town Board, a special meeting having been convened on 28th ultimo lor the purpose ; and that his suggestions to them as to noticing it, and stating whether they appioved of the offer of a loan, had been cavalierly received, and that the only reply they had made was to send back to him the Superintendent's communication. If, he said, the Town Board treated such a matter with cool indifference, and when they for once got something of importance befbie them, declined to take the smallest notice of it, the sooner another Board was appointed the better. Mr i-hrimski, in reply, said that Mr Ashcroft had no right to go to the Town Board as to a matter with which they had nothing to do ; — (A voice exclaimed — Did not Mr Ashcroft act on behalf of a public meUing?)— he had at : tempted to dictate to them ; ami that he ought to have reported the matter to those who gave him authority to act. The discussion was stopped as interfering with the pioper business of the meeting.
