There appears to bo a general depre&sion among all branches of trade in iho community It is not doubted, however, that as he summer advance? trade yviJl assume a more hr-aJfhy tone, The continued dry weather yvas causing "om? uneasiness among the farmers, but the f-tcady ram winch ha° lately fallen will relieve their rnnidtJ in 5 meat measure. Fanning operations have been rjioiecyted in the district this season with groat ugour, juii the coming census returns show, this place will advance in population,

DUNEDIN.—The markets are still without any particular change. Many of the farmers who, through the high price of oats last year and tho year previous, were induced to put in heavy crops of that grain, are disappointed at the over-stocked and depressed state of the market this season, and some of them who purchased land, counting upon a profitable return from the first crop, will be rather inconvenienced. They now see the absurdity of relying wholly upon oats. The copious supply of rain which we have had since our last report, has been of signal benefit to tho groyving crops and young grass. The former present a good braid, and the pasturage is putting on a luxuriant growth. The yvant of turnips is severely felt this season, very feyv having been sown oyving to the blight. Poor, new land with a stiff bottom is very unsuitable for the mangold, and few farmers would risk the sowing of it. Those who have soil suitable for the latter crop should, by all means sow it during the present month, and wo cannot too strongly urge upon our farmers the advisability of hereafter cultivating the rape, a member of tho brassica family of quick growth, suitable for supplying the place of turnipß in the spring, and affording a most succulent and nutritious food. It will grow, too, on any of our ordinary cultivated soils.—Witness.
