PUBLIC RACE MEETING.

A puoiio meeting was noia at tne otar ana waiter Hotel on Saturday evening, to take stops for getting jp races at Oamaru on the day following tho Agricultural Show. Mr Payne being voted to the chair, observed that -new had been easily got up in Waikouaiti and fimaru, and even some of the small digging towns a this Province could boast of their hack races, and lie could not see any reason why they should not •xert themselves a littlo in tho matter. There were nany sporting gentlemen in this district, who, he |flt sure would give their hearty support, and the urge meeting then present proved yvhat in< crest was alien in tho matter, He thought if a few gentlemen site to take active steps at once, and canvass the own and district for subscriptions, plenty would ]ock to their assistance, and get up a good day's :port. He himself understood little or nothing of ■acing matters, but observed some in the company fflto ho was sure were competent to make arrangements to get up this most favorite British sport. Mr George Taylor said ho was sure many were :ifjirous that races should be re-established in Oamaru, and thought that if subscription lists were it once opened at tho hotels and othor places in tho district, that there would be no difficulty as regards [he necessary funds. Mr John Barraclough felt very much pleasod that llicre was a likelihood of races being again got up in Oamaru. He believed if races were not re-estab-ishcd they would have their racecourse taken from them and sold. It was in his opinion quite enough to have tho Cape land sold away from them, and he hoped it would not bo the case with the racecourse for the want of looking after it. Mr Taylor proposed, seconded by Mr Sutherland -"That a working committee be formed out of the present company, to canvass for subscriptions." The followiug gentlemen were elected: —Messrs. laylor, Whito, Barraclough, Beattie, Sutherland, Parsons, and Payne. Mr Barraclough proposed, seconded by Mr Taylor —"That lists be at once made out, and advertise another meeting to elect officers, stewards &c." Mr Sutherland proposed, seconded by Mr White -"That the working committee meet at the Star jnd Garter Hotel on Tuesday, 11th inst, at 10 a.m., for the purpose of canvassing for subscriptions. Mr Payne was elected treasurer and secretary pro tern, and a subscription list being opened about £30 v&i at once collected. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings. On Tuesday last a meeting of the above committee w»s held, when subscription lists were distributed to the several members to take round. It was proposed by Mr Taylor, seconded by Mr Sutherland —" That a general meeting be advertised for Monday, October 17, to elect officers and for the transaction of general business for tho forthcoming wen."
