COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
Oam ahu Tiwrs Office, Wednesday Evening. We have remaiked that comnvrcicil matters havu not been \ery stirring in the Piovincc generallj during the past week, although there aie certain symptoms of revival in trade. Spring business has scarcely commenced heie yet, but jjjepnrations are now making for sheep shearing. yT \\ e hear rumors of an accession to our mer- * cantile fiinis in this place. We believe that Messrs Car, ill and Co ha\e taken a store and are about to ' stablish a branch business at Oarnaru. 'J hia cannot, under present ciicutustances be called good news, because the business transacted here as yet is necessarily ■* cry limited in extent, and if the place is overcrowded, the same bad effects will follow which occurred in Dunedin arid liuercargill, and from which those places still suffer. in regard to the mode of transacting business, we have for some time intended to notice the bjst'.m of long credit which is so prevalent at Oamaru. Southland, which has been commercially in a very poor way, has initiated a sjstem of rcash transactions, and is already experiencing the benefits of that §3 steny The Southland " JJa'lj News " 8<iss — " Although business transactions hove been limited, almost everything quitted is /or cash, or on very thort credit; in lact, credit for a lengthened period is now scarcely lonk'.il for." It appears to ha\e been a necessity, loi matt<r8 had come to the worst there, but its advantages are obvious. The evils of excessive ciedit are obvmid enough, and it is clear that those who do pay their accounts regularly have t,o bear thu inf'iaion of a higher charge, to cover the lohses from those who will not. We trust our storekeepers, and particularly new-comers, will see this in such a lig-ht as to avoid so eerious an. injury to our commercial prospects for the future. We now publish the Custom House returns for the quarter ending 3f th ult., which are highly favorable as compared with the previous quarter, with the exception of goods entered for bond. It should be borne in mind that the largest portion of the goods sent here pay duty in Dunedin, and not credited at all to this place in the revenue returns, and the free goods are taken no notice ol ■whatever. W^e are informed that a vessel may be expected here direct from England with goods in December or January, and to load with wool. One or two other vessels are also engaged to load wool, po th-u our roadstead is likely to present a K busy appearance during the wool season.
DUNEDIN. — Messrs M'Landress, Hepburn and Co.'e sale on 30th ulfc. was deferred until a later hour than usual, in consequenco of the absence of a large number of the citizens at the funeral of the late Mrs Jones. This circumstance appeared to hare interfered somewhat with the attendanco at the rooms, which was thinner than on Tuesday last. The bidding however wa3 spirited — a large proportion of the goods offered was disposed of. The Mauritius sugars — being principally flue countors — realized full rates, Bay from £35 17s 6d to £36 5s, for the class just named. — Daily Mail. — The next advices from Melbourne are waited for with much interest, meantime holders roinain firm in demanding extreme rafes. Sales of second brands of Adelaide are Btdl mado at £28, and for Chilian holders now demand £25 10s. Bacon and hams continue to attract attention, and sales are still made at full prices. Blood's and Dumphy's bottled beora aro still much run after, and oxtonsivo sales hare been made at 12s 6d to 13s. Bulk ales, especially light pale of favorite brands, more inquired for. The demand for sugar is moderate, still prices are maintained. — Times. INVEftCARGILL, Sept. 27.— Although business transactions have been limited during the week, they have been of a safe character, almost every linn g quitted being for cash, or on very short credit ; in fact, credit for a lengthened period is now scarcely asked for. "By the Fanny, from Melbourne, and the William Miskm, from Dunedin, we have received additions te our stocks of flour. The news, however, from Dunedin and Melbourne indicates a tendeu'ey to advance in price, best Adelaide being quoted in Melbourne at £24, and in Dunedin at £28. No great advaneo has taken place here, although the market exhibits an increased firmnes Of oats we have a fair supply, with a tolerably steady demand. Colonial feed oats are worth 5s to 5s 3d ; seed oats are quoted lit 6s. Potatoes still continue in good supply, and are of good quality ; for domestic use they are worth from £8 10s to £9. The market is fairly supplied with dairy produce. Butchers' meat, although of prime quality, still continues in price. The ship Arnn.i, from Glasgow, has arrived at Bluff Harbor during the week, with a number of immigrants and general cargo. AVe hear that several of tliese immigrant* have brought capital with them, and intend purchasing land and settling down amongst us. The«e are precisely the men at present wanted in Southland, and wo trust that every facility w ill bo given to enable them so to mvcbt their money, that it may be the means of securing a comfortable homo for them and their families, and secure to the province a number of valuable colonists. — Daily News. MAKLBOKOUGTf, Sept. 20.— Since our Inst report the hcav> ruins which have fallen have stopped mobt buMnes-9 operations. Trade has been duller through the last seven days than has been the easenny lime during the last Ihree months ; but, as the setfon ncUaii'03 and tbo -weather sets m settled, a revival in confidently anticipated Indeed, ptorekepers calculating on a large increase of business, arelaung m hea\y stocks of most descriptions of inert haiulfC.
