WANGANUI.

It is reported tliut the disaffected Waitotara natives have intimated that they will resist any attempt to carry the road through it. At present Mr Hogg is making two and a-half miles of road to Kai-iwi. Colonel Logan has intimated his willingness to send out 200 men to cover the working party so soon as Mr Hogg may think this step necessary. An importation of laborers, 120 in number, has gone up. The "Wangamvi Chronicle," of August 10, says : — "The Government Wharf, which has been in contemplation for more than a year past, was commenced yesterday, the first pile being driven in the presence of about half-a-dozen townspeople, including Mr Handley, chairman of the Town Board. This wharf, though not on a very large scale, will be of great advantage to the shipping, and will, no doubt, be soon and satisfactorily completed by Mr Column, the contractor." The Separation petition has been signed by a larger proportion of the electors than the promoters of the movement expected. Of those in town five out of fix signed it, and in the country on this side only two or three individuals have declined. On the right bank there are a few opposed to it ; but in Turakina and Rangitiki the settlers are almost unanimous in its favor. It is fully expected that four-fifths of the electors (about 22.)) will be obtained in favor of the measure. We learn that a family of Taranaki settlers, numbering 10, came down with the Wonga Wonga to settle here. They had rented from Mr Harrison, of Warrengate , 400 acres, and will no doubt be great acquisition in the neighborhood to which they are goiug.
