The Auckland papers contain later American news, bi ought by the Constance from California. Two preat bittles have been fought, one in FloiLla, i he other on tlie Potomac. In the foinier the Fnkrah mlmit h.uitig sustained a re\erse; in the litter, according to official dispatches Lee having been coin;>kt-ly defeated, and his arm, scattered to the winds on Febiiiiiiy 28, had so entirely recovered himself by March 3, that hi* notorious opponents could only hope by a strategic movement rearwards to attain "what" would practically amount to a \ictory. Lee had taken " some" piisoners, though their numbers would probably not exceed »000, and the Federal losses had ueen \anoi-s!y reckoned at from 10,000 to 50,000. As a natural consequence of gaining "a stupendous victory," followed by such results, (Jeneial Meade had been superseded, and General Hooker reinstated in command.
