HAWKESBURY. March 28, 1864. (From our own Correspondent.)
A meeting of our citizens took place at the Beach Hotel, the other day, for tlie object of forming a cricket club. It was numerously attended. There was a great want of unanimity shown as to the amount of the annual subscription fee. A committee was eventually elected to report as to the necessary amount required for the wants of the club ; to call upon Mr. J. Jones, for the purpose of obtaining the use of ground for the club ; and to report progress on the following Thursday. A match' was arranged to be played between the married and single of Hawkesbury, to take place on Tuesday last, the 22nd. The weather proved very boisterous. The married team, however, put in an appearance, an example not followed by the single team, a few of whom only were present. A match was got up on the ground, which ended in Nelme's team obtaining a score in one mnintis of 1 86 runs. Redsdale's team obtained only 108, beingbeaten by 76 runs. The metalling of Beach-street is being carried on ; the width laid down is 15 feet. The Government works are gradually being brought to a close ; I think for the present they will cease this week. The roadmen have proved a great help to our storekeepers in these dull times. Gieat credit is due them for their orderly behavior whilst here. The posts for the telegraph line from this to Dunedin are being sent in. They are of manuka or tea-tree, and are carted from Blueskin. The posts are to be placed 10 chains apart. Pleuro-pneumonia is still steadily on the increase, Provincial-bred cattle being greater sufferers than imported cnttle. The Lady of the Lake steamer is again running between this and Dunedin.
