TOWN BOARD.

A general meeting of the Town Board was held at the office of Mr J. Y. Ward, on Thursday last, the 24th instant. Present — Messrs. Hassell fin the chair), Thompson, Gibbs, and Baudinett. The minutes of previous meeting were read. Mr Thompson objected to their being passed until the motion ordering the payment of Ferguson and Mitchells bill, for a stamp-press, be expunged. Mr Baudinett thought the bill had not been ordered to be paid at the last meeting of the Board. The Clerk observed that at a meeting held some time ago, the bill was ordered to be paid. It was then moved by Mr Gibbs that the motion be rescinded, and that the stamppress be returned to Messrs Ferguson and Mitchell, it not being what was ordered. Carried. The minutes were then confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from Mr James Ashcroft, pointing out the necessity of pitching the main sewer now in course of formation, and extending a wooden trough from its opening across the creek to low watermark, in order to make it of benefit to the town. Referred to the Public Works Committee. A letter from the Rev. A. Gifford was read, calling the attention of the Board to the custom of the choir of his congregation meeting for practice at the Court-house on Thursday evenings, and requesting the Board to make such arrangements for their meetings as will not interfere with it. The Clerk was instructed to reply, stating that the request should be complied with. GENERAL BUSINESS. An application from Mr Beattie, contractor for the main sewer, for £350, was •handed in with the Surveyor's certificate, showing that work to that amount was completed. Seventy-five per cent, on the Surveyor's certificate was ordered to be paid — £262 15s. Application was made by Mr Thompson

for the payment of £1*74, for the erection of 14 chains and 50 lints of fencing round Esplanade. Ordered to be paid, but subjected to a deduction of 25 per cent, till the completion of the contract. Salaries in the Surveyor's department, amounting to £73 Bs., were ordered to be paid. Salary of the Clerk of the Board for the year ending February, 1864, amounting to £80, was ordered to be paid. Mr Gibbs moved that the Superintendent be requested to have placed on the estimates £200, £2000, to complete the fencing of Esplanade, and to carry on improvements in the town respectively, and also a farther sum to cover the expense of having the roadstead of Oamaru surveyed and reported upon as to what improvements would be most practicable ; and that Mr Miller, the representative of the town in Council, be requested to watch over the above resolution in Council. Moved that Mr Millar be requested to meet the Board, before the opening of the next session of Council. NOTICE OF MOTION. Mr Gibbs gave notice that he would request to have read at the next meeting of the Board the minutes and correspondence relative to applications made to the Provincial Council for grants of money.
