VICTORIA, VANCOUVER'S ISLAND.
The following is an extract from a private letter, dated October 14, 1863 :—: — This place (Victoria) is as dead and stagnant, just now, as it is possible to be. Money is scarce, and work, except for a fe\r mechanics, is not to be had. Merchants and shopkeepers are not making current expenees, and many of them rapidly drifting into insolvency. In fact, the colony is a gigantic humbug, and we have all been most cruelly sold in coming here. Those who have the means are leaving as fast as they can some for home, and many for New Zealand and Australia. The only good thing in the country is the climate, which is salubrious. There has been no immigration this year to speak of, which shows that the truth has come out at home. I have been up at Cariboo, the much-vaunted El Dorado, but am not favorably impressed with it.
