The Kaitaia team is practically a new combination, very few of last year’s seniors now playing. For a first match of the season the game was decidedly good and it was unfortunate that there was not a bigger gallery present to witness this fast clean game. Mr. Des Barry was referee. Houhora Just Pips Awanui The Houhora seniors had a onepoint victory over Awanui last Saturday. In the first spell the northern boys had the advantage but rallied in the second spell but could not quite catch Houhora’s score, the game ending, Houhora 6, Awanui 5. For the winners Freddie Evans put on 3 points, with a great kick while Urwin sent Silva over to score. Heke Yates gained Awanui’s points when he went over for a good try which he, himself converted. Mr. Val Beazley was referee. JUNIOR GAMES Both junior games ended in a draw, at Awanui 3 all, at Kaitaia no score. The Kaitaia juniors put up a great fight against their weightier, Ahipara opponents and were able to successfully defend their line right through.

Camera-Shy Jockeys Steeplechase jockeys have a supei’stition that it is unlucky to be photographed before or during a race. They fear it is the precursor of a bad tumble or some other form of ill luck. Some riders have officially objected to photographers pointing their cameras when horses are appi’oaching fences or hui’dles. Sevei’al times the late Micky Tighe, on becoming unseated at an obstacle, sat for three or four minutes on the ground venting his spleen on unfoi-tunate cameramen. Tighe, despite many falls, escaped very sei'ious injury riding, but met his death in a motor car crash
