Kaitaia’s Coronation Week

A Carnival Shopping Week Organised by the Business Firms Holiday to be Observed on Coronation Day Parade of Ex-Servicemen at Ivaitaia 'J'O suitably celebrate the Coronation of our King and Queen, the business firms of Kaitaia have decided to hold a week of carnival commencing on Monday, May 10, and finalising in a real carnival day on Saturday, May 15. On the latter day, Saturday, a band will be in attendance during the afternoon and evening, selections being played in the main street. The carnival spirit will enter into the shops also, the employers and assistants being appropriately dressed.

This is Kaitaia’s first shopping carnival week and the progressive firms of the town are determined to make it a memorable week for the many customers that it is expected will be shopping in Kaitaia that week. The progress of Kaitaia during the last decade has been exceptional and this progress has been reflected in the businesses in the town. Kaitaia is noted as a town wherein you can obtain a wide selection of articles at a very reasonable cost. The business firms are proud of this record and you may be sure that during the shopping week there will be numerous attractions in the various establishments. You are invited by the businessmen to shop in Kaitaia that week and you will continue to do your shopping there. Those in Control The officers of the Kaitaia Businessmen’s Association are : President Mr. P. Yendell ; Secretary—Mr. D. Archibald ; Executive Commrttec—Messrs. A. G. Horsley, H. Timbers, C. Vaughan, D. Hudson and J. Madden. The following are in charge of the various competitions and sections : Window dressing and window judging (public)—P. Yendell and A. G. Horsley ; Mystery Man and Spotting Competition D. Hudson and C. G. Vaughan ; Lucky Numbers and Ugly Man—J. Madden and D. Archibald ; Advertising J. Madden ; Children and Haka Competition H. Timbers and P. Yendell. Window Dressing Competition No person other than the proprietor or his assistants are eligible to cornpete. This competition will be divided into three sections as follows : (a) Ironmongery, Hardware, Crockery, Grocery, Cycles, Garages. (b) Drapery and Clothing, Fancy Goods, Boots and Shoes, Furniture. (c) Tobacconists, Chemists, Fruiterers, Music, Confectioners, Cake Shops. Prizes in each class will be : First 30/-, second 10/-, and highly commended. Each competing window will have a disc affixed as follows : Red, Section A ; Blue, Section B ; Green, Section C. This competition will be judged at any time after 4 p.m. on May 10th. The results will not be made known until noon on Saturday, May 15th. Window Judging Competition This competition is open to the general public, with the exception of owners or employees of any shop entered in the Window Dressing competition. All you have to do is to place the windows in the order you think they should be. The solution nearest the judge’s placings will be the winner. Should more than one entry be correct, the one opened first will be the winner. Entry forms are obtainable at any shop. Only one attempt to each person allowed. Prizes : First, Goods value £1 ; second, Goods value 10/-. Entries close at 11.30 a.m. on Saturday. Spotting Competition In each window bearing a White Disc, a mistake has been made ; for instance, there is a screw in a draper’s window, a reel of cotton in a grocer’s window, or perhaps a mis-spelt word

on a show card. See how many mistakes you can find. 1 prize £l, second 10/-. Entry forms at any shop. Lucky Number Competition Circulars have been distributed, and each circular bears a number. It is your Lucky Number. All firms displaying a Gold Disc will have numbers displayed on various articles. If any number corresponds with the number of your circular, on producing same you will be entitled to this article. Numbers may be either in the windows or in the shop. Every number displayed is on some circular. All prize winners will be published. These numbers are changed daily, so come into Kaitaia every day during Coronation Week, you may be lucky. Haka Contest On Saturday, May 15th, at 2 p.m.,

a Maori Haka Contest will be held, each team to consist of five. Entry free. First prize £5, second £1 10/-.

Something for the Children On Saturday, May 15th, there w.ill be a parade of children in fancy dresses, decorated cycles, tricycles and prams. A good prize will be given in each of the following sections : Decorated Cycle, under 14 years, boys and girls. Decorated Tricycle, under 7 years, boys and girls. Decorated Prams, under 7 years, boys and girls. Best Fancy Costume, boys. Best Fancy Costume, girls.

The children, together with haka teams, will assemble outside the Central boardinghouse at 1 p.m. Headed by a visiting band they will march along Commerce street to a point where the judging will take place. Carnival Day Employers and employees in all shops will be attired in fancy costume on Saturday, May 15th. Good prizes will be given for the best costumes ; this competition will be judged by popular vote. First prize, 1 day’s holiday. Mystery Man “Are you the Mystery Man?” This will be the great question you are to ask all you see in Kaitaia during Coronation Week. If you ask the right man you receive a prize. Ugly Man Contest This contest will go on throughout shopping week. For particulars see the board that will be displayed in the street throughout the week. Although it has not been declared a public holiday, Coronation Day will be observed generally throughout New Zealand as a holiday and the business firms in Kaitaia will be closed on that day. The following hours of attendance will be observed at the Kaitaia post office on Wednesday, 12th May (Coronation Day) : Post Office. Clostd all day. A mail wiH close for Auckland at 6 a.m. only. No inward mail will be sorted. Telegraph Office. —Closed ail dav. Telegrams may be lodged at the telephone exchange. Telephone Exchange. Open continuously. On Tuesday evening, 11th May, a delivery of all correspondence will be made over the counter between 8 p.m. and 8.45 p.m. The following arrangements were finalised by the committee of the County R.S.A. for the parade of exservicemen at Kaitaia on Wednesday, Coronation Day : The parade which will be under Captain J. Muir, will fall in at the War Memorial monument, Commerce street, at 10.45 and at 11 a.m. will parade up Commerce street at the head of the parade in connection with the A. and P. Coronation Gala. The salute will be taken at the Post Office by the county chairman who will have the president of the R.S.A. and others associated with him. At the Council Chamber's corner the parade will halt and the official proclamation, if any, will be read or a short address given by the county chairman, Mr. W. Vickers. Members of the County Council, Kaitaia Town Board and otheg 1 organisations will be invited to be

present at this point. After the address the parade will move on to the A. and P. hall where an army issue of rum will be given the troops and the loyal toast and one to absent comrades will be honoured. Invitations will be extended to County councillors and Town Board members to be present at the hall. The local territorial unit is to be asked to join in the parade and the public are invited to attend. Ex-servicemen are reminded that decorations must be worn.

Hoskin (steward), R. R. Lewis (steward), Alex Wright (judge). Throwing the sheaf —J. Cowie (steward), L. A. Mclntosh (judge). Foot tug of war—W. Yendell (steward), J. Cowie (steward), L. A. McIntosh (judge). Field Secretaries—W. H. Farrimond and W. F. Berry.
