Rev. J. A. Larnond wijl hold divine service in McKay’s hall on Christmas morning at 11 o’clock. The Queensland Government has passed an Act reducing the Governor’s salary from i!5000 to 48000. The Snowflake Minstrels intend to puton an entirely new programme for the concert on race night. Bunkall’s hall at Herekino, recently opened, is one of the largest and best appointed in the North. Councillor Bray took his seat at the North Auckland Charitable Aid Board’s meeting on the 7th instant. Severe hail squalls were experienced throughout the North last Wednesday, being especially severe on the west coast. A bill introduced into the Reichstag provides for the gradual increase of the Germany Army on a peace footing to 505,839. Our readers are reminded of the concert to-night, which has been promoted by Mr. Light, in aid of the hospital and brass band. The British Admiralty has decided not to renew the agreement with the P. and 0. Company for tho use of its steamers as auxiliary cruisers. The United States Government estimates this year’s cotton crops at over 12 million bales, or about 900,000 beyond the previous record.
Mangonui annual races, to take place on Cooper’s Bcacb on 2nd January, promise to be most successful. The energetic secretary, Mr. T. Wallen, and the other officials, are working hard to ensure a pleasant day’s outing.
At the last meeting of the North Auckland Cliaritablo Aid Board, held on December 7th, Mr. Bray aaked whether the plans, etc., of the Mangonui Cottage Hospital had been returned. The Chairman replied in the negative, saying that as soon as they were received the MangonuP Council would be communicated with.
We have received a letter from Mr. J. C. Kirby, of Victoria Valley, enclosing the sum of £3 5/-. which amount was realised at a concert held there some time ago. It was originally intended to form an orchestral society, but that movement having fallen through, the committee decided to hand the aniopnt over to the hospital trustees.
Three natives named Wi Tore Haora, Paul Haora, and Potter (the former arrested on Waingakau gumfields by Constable Henry, the two latter by Constable Douthett) are to be tried on Wednesday next at Kaeo, for cattle-stealing. The alleged offence took place about May last, the stolen animals being the property of Mr. Allan Ncsbit, of Kaeo. Mr. Purdy, who has been Inspector of Schools in the North for some years, has concluded his ’annual inspection. We understand that he has received notice of transfer to the Whangurei South district. During Mr. Purdy’s term the schools under his control have received distinct benefit, as he has proved,himself a painstaking, energetic and efficient officer.
We have received from the Chamberlain Medicine Co. a little booklet, entitled “ The Man Behind the Counter.” This booklet is not for general distribution, but intended for the salesman, to enable him to increase his usefulness. Chamberlain Medicine Co., Sydney, will be pleased to send a sample, free of expense, to any storekeeper who may write for same.
Mr. Switzer, sen., for many rears resident at Victoria Valley, held his clearing sale as advertised on Friday last. The sale was fairly well attended, the furniture and household effects realising satisfactory prices, but offers for live stock not reaching the reserve placed upon them the majority were passed in. Mr. Switzer with his family leaves early in the New Year for Te Koporu, where he enters into the servioo of Messrs. Brown and Sons, the well-known shipbuilders, late of Lane and Brown, Tame Tame.
