BREVITIES.

L Footrace# at Wainakuu on 22n<l De- ■ ccmber. ■ A basket social, in aid of the organ ■ fund, was held at Fairbum on Thursday 1 lMt mL Mr. Montgomery, representing Messrs. 11l Milne and Choyce, is at present in the M district. ■ The heavy rain laßt week brought a W large number of logs down the Oruru ■ Peria rivers. / I Mr. W. Thompson, ex-Councillor, has [ taken up his duties as engineer to the [ County Council. Mangonni Racing Club’s annual meeting on January 2nd promises to be a record gathering. The Maugonui County Agricultural and Pastoral Show will be held at Kaitaia on March 10th next. Constables Scfton, Henry and Bowman returned from Supreme Court duty per s.B. Wellington last week. Mr. Percy Lambly has been appointed linesman, attached to the Mangonui post office, vice Mr. Blackburn Resigned. Mr. W. J. Harris, one of the Licensing Commissioners, left for Kawukawa last Thursday, on a visit in his official capacity. Kawakawa Racing Club’s annual meeting takes place on January 30th, 1905. The programme, which is now in circulation, is a liberal one. P The recent heavy floods washed away two culverts between Mangonui and the Cable Station, besides doing minor damage in the township. Mr. Purdy, School Inspector, arrived in last Thursday. After inspecting the local school he proceeded north on similar duty. Quite a number of logs are at present iambed in the Oruru river agamst the bridges, and as lying are a menace to the safety of these structures. Mr. Blake, surveyor, after completing j his present survey at Victoria Valley, returns to Mangonui to lay off and survey the proposed new road to the Cable Station. - Mr. A. H. Light, representing Messrs. | Geo. Richardson and Co., arrived per s.s. Wellington last week, bringing with him a stock of sample pianos. Intending buyers would do well to give him a call. Mr. J. N. Berghan, of Ahipara, visited Mangonui last week in connection with the recent dispute between the Natives and Mitchelson Bros., who have obtained I timber concessions at Herekino and Whongape. Our local saddler is to the front with a replace advertisement in this issue. Mr. McCreadv is nothing if not pushing, and having at present a very large stock of r saddles, etc., in hand from which to choose, we strongly advise those in need of such to give him a call. We have received several complaints from exhibitors at the Oruru Show, who wish to see the exhibit of goods within the hall protected by wire netting. This it seems is done with perishable goods at the Kaitaia Show, and prevents a considerable amount of mauling by the curiously inclined. In telegraphic news appearing in our last issue, Mr. Alfred Kidd, late of the Commercial Hotel, Auckland, was referred to as having died. This was an error in transmission, it being Mrs. Alfred Kidd who has passed away. Mrs. Kidd had been ailing for some time past, and her end was not unexpected. There is at present great activity in the timber-hauliug industry at Peria and vicinity, there being quite a number of bullock teams on the road. Apropos of which we have received complaints from several settlers on the Fairbum road that the bullock waggons are doing great dunage to that road through over-load-ing.

A grand concert is to be held in the Masonic Hall on December 20th, in aid of the Cottage Hospital and brass band funds. The proceeds will be equally divided. Mr. A. H. Light, representing the well-known firm of Messrs. George Richardson and Co., is the promoter, in reference to which an advertisement appears elsewhere. Those who have travelled by the s.s. Clansman in the old days will scarcely now recognise the old favorite. She has now Mow nni-npwerful boilers, is fitted throughout with electric light, has greatly increased occoiftfn?dation, «4seti fitted with rolling chock*, 'anu ; is ' much faster and more comfortable bvdt than of yore. The Snowflake Minstrels are sanguine as to the financial success of the Waipapakauri entertainment, proceeds of which, os in their previous concerts, will be paid into the Hospital Trustees. It will interest the well-wishers of the County Cottage Hospital to learn that there are now funds in hand over and above the amount asked for by the North Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, to warrant the erection of a building costing I ATOOO. The Kaitaia District Medical Club have I entered into an agreement with Dr. I JkJftchard (who succeeded Dr. Reekie as Sir medical officer), and have had drawn up ■ and printed a revised scale of charges. ■ Itas within our memory when the Kaitaia. I was w^^oufc a medical officer, so ■ it^ehoves„ residents of that locality to '■give the Club and medical officer thoir ■ loyal support.
