What Price the Roadless North?
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,--Mu, James Caldwell, M.P., who is touring the Colony, draws an interesting comparison between America and New Zealand in certain features. He states “America appears to be bent on pushing her way without paying much heed to the comforts of civilisation. In America no proper provision for roads is made, and the roads are in a very defective condition.” He says of Auckland that “it is a very nice town and the roadway's are good.” No doubt, but what about, the poor suffering surrounding country ? The roads af a rule are a disgrace to civilisation. Perhaps our worthy councillors might invite this gentleman (Mr. Caldwell) to ride a trial trip through to Hohoura in the winter months, and if the roads in this part of New Zealand cannot beat America, well—l guess I’m gol darned. STICK-IN-THE-MUD. Taipa, 7th November, 1904.
