The Mangonui Cricket Club, we are pleased to observe, are holding regular weekly practices. We expect to see a strong team prepared to do battle for Mangonui when they meet opposing teams.

Military and athletic sports, in aid of the Veteran’s Home, Auckland, will be held in Kensington Park, Whangarei, tomorrow (King’s Birthday). There are 16 events on the programme, and in the evening a grand military ball.

The gentlemen of Totara arc giving a grand ball in the Totara Hall on November 18th. Some 200 invitations have been issued, and, given fine weather, a large assemblage of guests is expected.

Reports from parties who have been out fishing in Doubtless Bay lately bring complaints of the scarcity of fish. Last week the Wellington left earlier than usual, wdth the object of a few’ hours’ fishing, but were unsuccessful, not catching a single schnapper.

Mr. J. Blackburn, linesman at the local post office, intends to shortly lealve the colony, to take up his residence at Fremantle (W.A.). In this issue he advertises for private sale the whole of his household furniture and effects, all nearly new’, also one saddle and bridle.

The Secretary to the Board of Education notifies that, owing to the attendance at the Mangonui School having fallen below the- ntimber which entitles an assistant teacher, Miss Sandford will be transferred. This is a matter for regret. It is not yet too late for parents to bestir themselves, in the matter of their children’s regular attendance.

Messrs. Vernon Reed and G. Marshall last week fixed upon the site for their flax-mill, at the Double Crossing, Kaitaia. It is expected that the mill machinery will arrive in a w’eek or a fortnight’s time, and that operations will be started before the end of the month. We understand the show of flax is considered satisfactory, and a continued run is expected.
