In our issue of October 4th we mentioned that Messrs. Long and Johnston had acquired certain timber concessions in the North. We were it seems in error in coupling those gentlemen’s names as concessionaires. We notice that our old friend Mr. A. D. Clemett, late postmaster at Mangonui, continues to take an interest in school matters, he at present occupying the position of Chairman of the Foxto® School Committee. Mr. John Pennington Thomasson, of Woodside, Bolton, and of the firm of John Thomasson and Son, cotton spinners, Liberal M.P. for Bolton 1880-5, and executor of Mr. Cobden’s will, has left estate valued at £1,146,749. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Carr, of Kaeo, have the sympathy of many friends in the loss by death from peritonitis of a little five-year-old daughter. We understand a second child, suffering from the same complaint, is on the road to recovery.
The Government schooner “Countess of Ranfurly” is at present engaged in carrying indentured labour from Niue (Cook Islands group) to Malden Island, under charter to a Melbourne firm en - gaged in working the extensive guano deposits at that place.
Among the applicants recently at a West London police court for sum monses, was a woman who asked for a summons for desertion. Her husband, she said, deserted her in 1869, and she did not see him again until the previous! day. The magistrate granted the sum-! mons.
At a meeting of the Cottage Hospital Advisory Committee, held last evening, Mr. Powell (this County’s representative) reported on the North Aucldand Charitable Aid Board’B attitude towards the movement, which is in every way favorable. Dr. McGregor is sending an officer immediately to report on the proposed site.
Tenders are invited by the Lands Department up till 12 o’clock noon, October 28th, 1904, for the purchase of the undermentioned timber, standing on Lot 12, part block XIII, Takahue 5.D.—434 Totara trees, about 234,000 superficial feet; 213 Rimu trees, about 204,000 superficial feet; 3 Kauri trees, about 19,000 superficial feet. Mr. C. J. Fulton, the Chief Fibre Expert, in his report, to the Minister of Agriculture, on the year’s operations, says:—That at the ports of Auckland and the Bluff large quantities of inferior fibre are received. This indicates the great necessity for giving practical instruction to the miller. Despairing of attracting people to church on hot Sundays, the Baptist pastor of Parkersburg, West Virginia, announces that he will preach during the summer from the local mountain-top, called “Devil’s Table.” He proposes to use a tremendous megaphone. The advertisement states that the service will* be followed and preceded by tight-rope and trapeze performances. Picnic parties are specially invited.
