Labour Report.
Messrs. R. M. Heighten & Co. report: Applications for employment have bean numerous, and some first-class hands applying. The demand for first and second-class hands in all departments has been slow*, wages offered not being up to the usual standard and have the appearance of being equal to the employers’ returns.
The engagements for the month of September were as follows: —Farm hands and milkers, 12/- to 25/- and found; gardeners and labourers 12/- to 20/- and found; farm couples, little or no demand at £65 to £100; carpenters and other tradesmen, 7/- to 10/- per day; labourers 6/- to 8/- ;. gardeners and grooms, number offering, no demand; numerous applicants for hotel work, but little demand. Great demand for respectable and reliable domestic servants, but few applicants. Our registry shows a large and increasing numlier of hands, but for some unknown reason employers have been slow’ in coming forward, it may be from the unreasonable demand of the worker to avoid giving his employer due service for the value of remuneration received. What this country needs for the unemployed is a State free transit passenger railway run from the general revenue funds.
