ELECTORS OF NELSON.— The opponents of Mr. Domett are endeavouring to prejudice that gentleman's election by insinuating that, should Mr. Domett be elected, he will not be likely to accept the office of representing you. Ten years ago, when Governor FitzEoy wished to give the old Nominee Council the character of a popular assembly, and offered to call to it any gentleman whom the people of Nelson might name for the purpose, Mr. Domett, on being solicited by his fellowsettlers to undertake the duty, saw at once through the sham, and, while refusing to go into a Council, where an independent member would have had to stand to be " bowled down like a skittle," made the following declaration with respect to an event which has now come to be realized : — "If such a Government should hereafter be established in New Zealand as a popular representative might either usefully support or usefully oppose, and you should be pleased to express the same wishes as on this occasion, I shall then be most happy to show myself in that particular, as now in all others, " Gentlemen, " Your most obedient servant, "Alpbed Domett.
