Sir — We, the undersigned, electors under the Nelson Trust Funds Act, lvquesfc that you will allow yourself to be nominated as a candidate to fill one of the vacancies now existing in the Board of Trustees. , We are of opinum that your thorough acquaintance with the wants and capabilities of the Province, and your experience in offices of like character and trust, render your assistance in the administration of the Trust Funds highly desirable, and should you authorize us to do so, we will use every exertion to secure your election. Curtis, Esqrs., and the other Gentlemen signing the Requisition. Gentlemen — In answering your Requisition, allow me first to thank you very sincerely for puch a mark of your confidence. Believing the Trust Funds, rightly administered, to be of essential importance to the future welfare of the Province, I have always felt a great interest in them, and if through you lam enabled to take an active part in their management, I shall be happy to assist in carrying out to the best of my ability the objects of the Trust. On these such a general agreement now prevails, that fo give any detailed explanation of my own opinions seems almost superfluous. We are all agreed, I believe, in wishing to obtain from the Home Government that portion of our Funds which is still withheld from us, amounting, as I onco endeavoured to show, to considerably more than £20,000. We arc all awake to the importance of promoting an easy, safe, and expeditious mode of communicating by Steam between Nelson find the detached outlying settlements ; and we arc daily, I hope, becoming more and more impressed with the necessity of establishing a full and comprehensive system of Education, if we wisli to maintain and raise the character of our adopted country, or to keep among us those, whose intelligence having convinced them of its importance, and means enabling them to procure it elsewhere for their children, will otherwise leave us, one after another, and so become a constant dprifi^ slow but sure, of our best resources, material ,jaftoral, and intellectual. Again offering to you my beaj^aeknowledgments for this expression of your goodnvill, /am, Gentlemen, M Very faithfully yours, / J. D. Greenwood. Motueka, October 29, 1855.
