THE NELSON EXAMINER. Wednesday, October 24, 1855.

The importance of the European news brought by the Spray, from Sydney, has induced us to devote all the space we have available to its publication, omitting until Saturday several communications from correspondents, the shipping, and notices of local meetings. In our next publication we shall give further details of the progress of the war. Lord Raglan died of dysentery on the 28th of June. General Simpson has been appointed to the command of the British army in the Crimea. This gallant officer served in the Peninsular War, and was wounded at Quatre Bras, in 1815; was second in command to Sir Charles Napier, in Scinde ; and was considered by Sir Charles as his best officer. The ship Maori arrived yesterday, with ninety assisted immigrants for Nelson, and several passengers for this and other ports in New Zealand. The passage of this fine vessel has been unusually long, having extended to 107 days, which has arisen from baffling and head winds. The Maori left Gravesend on the 7th of July, and consequently she brings two days' later news than was contained in the mail by the Champion of the Seas. The telegraphic news from the Crimea was to the sth of July. Nothing of importance had occurred, but the siege was progressing, and the state of the army satisfactory. Our readers will perceive by advertisement, that a performance takes place this evening, at the Victoria Circus, for the benefit of the British Patriotic Fund, Mr. Foley having generously engaged to devote one-half of the gross proceeds of the evening towards the survivors, of the families of our brave countrymen who have fallen in the Crimea. The public of Nelson will, we are sure, appreciate this act of liberality, and we shall expect to see the Circus crowded. This performance will be the last here, as Mr. Foley proceeds to Wellington in the steamer.
