Correspondence.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE 'NELSON EIAMINEB.'
Sir — In proposing the resolution on the subject of the Nelson Post Office, published in your last issue, amongst the proceedings of the General Assembly, I did not (as reported in the Auckland papers, from which I presume you copy) make any statement "that the business of that office was ill-managed." I simply stated, " that the increasing trade of the place required greater facilities for posting and receiving letters. That it would oe con- * venient to the merchants, &c, in Nelson, that the Post Office should be opened by 10 o'clock in the morning, instead of 1 1, as theretofore ► That Saturday was a kind of market-day i» Nelson, when people resident in the country ~ generally came to town. That those who lived at a distance frequently arrived after the office was closed, and nad to go home without their letters. That it was desirable therefore, for the convenience of the public in the outlying districts, that the office should be kept open until 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoons." This was all I said on the subject, and I think it due to myself, and to- the Postmaster, to say so. Whilst, however, I deny the statement imputed to me, I do not mean it to be understood that I approve of the management of the Post Office, although I am aware that want of proper space, and of occasional assistance, in some measure excuse the officer. Had I, when in Auckland, been awaTe of the gross neglect of the Colonial Secretary, in re^ ference to the building of the new. Post Office, I should have brought the matter under the notice of the Governor; and I trust the public of Nelson will take mS&tSegfof doing so wnitt he makes his proposed visit. I am, &c, ';,'„ ', W. T. L. Travem. Selwyn Place, October 8, 1855. P.S. I believe Mr. Mackay (member for the Town) had charge of a memorial on the subject of the Post Office, which was shown to the Executive, but did not- come T>efore the house.
