The following were voted : — Printing and Stationery . . . £1,000 Firewood, at Auckland . . . 200 Travelling Expenses . . . 600 Presents to Natives . . . 300 { Miscellaneous .... 2,000 £4,100 Interest on Debentures, principal issued at Wellington, at 8 per i cent, £3,675 16s . . . £294 The next item was Schools, under the management of the Church of Eome . . . £600 | Mr. Tbavebs moved, as an amendment, that the Tote of the sums proposed for educational purposes, in connexion with the Church of Rome and the Wesleyan body, would be a departure from the principle of civil equality established by the house, and that such sums should be expunged from the Estimates, j Original motion earned, this payment heing conceived to be in accordance with an arrangement en- j tered into by Sir George Grey. The sum of £700 to the Wesleyans, for a like purpose, was agreed to. Postal Communication. Mr. Tbavees moved the consideration of the postponed item, Postal Communication between the Provinces by Steam, £6,000. Agreed to. Mr. Travebs moved the following resolution, to be appended to the vote :— "That the sum of £6,000 be placed upon the Estimates for postal communication between the Provinces by steam, but that in case the services of the steamer be not extended to Otago, that Province should be exonerated from a proportionate part of the said sum. Message No. 37. Mr. Tbavebs moved that the sum of £60 be voted to defray the additional salary of the Colonial Treasure recommended in this message. Agreed to. The Speaker resumed the chair, and the Chaibman having reported progress, the house adjourned.
