NEW PLYMOUTH.
[Extracts from a private letter.]
June 20.
We read with much pleasure the intelligence respecting Mr. Domett's acceptance of a seat in the Legislative Council : he has the best wishes of all here that success may attend him in his new career of usefulness.
We have had very unfavourable weather here for the last three" or four months — torrents of rain almost every day, with violent thunder and lightning, and at times hail
storms— which has much retarded agricultural operations. On Tuesday last Mr. M'Lean returned from Wanganui, accompanied by the son of the Rev. Mr. Taylor, with the intelligence that the negotiation with the natives for the settlement of the land question in that district had failed. On the Thursday after his return several persons were sworn in as police constables, under his superintendence : they have six hours on duty and six hours off.
It is hardly necessary for me to say how anxiously we have all been expecting a visit from the Governor, or how bitterly we have been disappointed. His speedy arrival would be hailed with universal delight ; and I believe there are many amongst us whose future movements would be governed by what might then take place.
On Friday last the Carbon arrived here from Wellington (Mr. T. King, passenger), bringing news of the disturbances there, and information respecting a deserter from the 99th Regiment, who had been employed for some weeks by Mr. Hoskin, shoemaker, of this place : he has been placed under confinement, and will be sent to Wellington by the first opportunity.
June 22.
Arrived to-day, the Sarah Berry, from Nelson, with goods and passengers for Manakau.
