House of Commons, Tuesday, Feb. 17. CORN LAWS.
The adjourned debate was resumed by Lord John Manners, who endeavoured to upset the arguments urged by Sir Robert Peel. Captain La yard supported the Government. Mr. R. Palmer opposed the Ministerial scheme. Sir C. Napier eulogised the Government. Mr. Shaw opposed the measure. Mr. Bright defended Sir Robert Peel, and praised his proposal. Mr. Hudson objected to legislate on a great principle, merely to meet the case of a temporary calamity. The great question of a repeal of the Corn Laws ought not to have been embarrassed with the potato scarcity. The Government had studiously kept out of view what
the price of corn would be under the proposed law; but he could tell the country, from his own practical experience, and from information gathered from those best acquainted with tfye subject, that it would not exceed 355. or 40a. He was himself, in 1837, enabled to have foreign wheat in our ports at 255. the quarter; and, making every allowance, he believed that 35a. or 40s. would be the price the British farmer would be obliged to sell at under the proposed new law. He promised his vigorous opposition to the Government scheme. I
