The Beagle's Survey. — In the chart of Bass's Straits, surveyed by Commander Stokes and the officers of the Beagle, and published by the Admiralty 31st December, 1844, a material error occurs. It appears that there is a mistake of one degree in the longitude. For instance, King's Island is in 145' E. long., but in the Beagle's chart the longitudinal line which runs through the island is printed 144. Emu Bay and Cape Liptrap are marked as 145' instead of 146' ; so Stony Head is shown to be 146', whereas it lies in 147. Cape Portland, Flinders' Island, and the easternmost inlet of the Sisters, appear to be in 147' instead of 148' E. Colonial traders may of course correct their copies of this chart, but there is some danger that strangers, depending on an official publication, may be led into fatal error. "We hope the press will give the utmost publicity to the mistake, and that as soon as the Admiralty Office is informed of the blunder, most probably committed by its engraver, a new chart will be issued, and those Bheets remaining unsold, which contain the error, destroyed. — Launceston Examiner.
