AGRICULTURAL AND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A respectable and numerous meeting of those who feel an interest in the re-estab-lishment of the above society, was held at the Institution on "Wednesday last.

Mr. Fox was called to the chair.

Mr. Cautley, secretary to the late society, informed the meeting of the very generous offer made by the Governor to subscribe ten guineas a year to the societj', if revived ; to send a collection of trees an d shrubs from the Government gardens at Auckland ; and to procure others from the adjacent colonies. His Excellency also expressed a desire to become the President of the society, and said, that if an arrangement was made with the society at Wellington so as to have the exhibitions at conjvenient periods, he would always be presenjt on these occasions, and bring with him iti the steamer as much company as possible. His Excellency was also willing to grant to the society the exclusive use of the ground reserved for a Botanical Garden for twentyone years. A conversation then ensued, and the opinion of all present appeared to be decidedly in favour of re-establishing the society. Proposed by Mr. Saxton, seconded by Mr. J. H. Cooper, ' " That the Nelson Agricultural and Horticultural Society be revived." j Carried unanimously. j Proposed by Mr. Fell, seconded by the Hon. C. A. Dillon, \ " That his Excellency the Lieutenant Governor having in the most obliging manner offered to become president of the society, and to give a subscription of ten guineas, that the thanks of the society be presented to his Excellency for his liberality and condescension."

Carried unanimously. The following officers were then elected for the ensuing year : — Vice President, the Hon C. A. Dillon ; Treasurer, Mr. Sweet ; Secretaries, Messrs. Stafford, Monro, and Cautley ; Committee, Messrs. Martin, Barnicoat, Fox, Otterson, Bush, and Sweet.
