NELSON LITERARY INSTITUTION.

The fourth annual meeting of the Nelson Literary Institution was held on Wednesday last, the President (Mr. Fox) in the chair. Two alterations in the law relating to the admission of members had been proposed : the first was to reimpose the admission fee of £1, taken off about two years since, and the second, to allow the members who had paid this fee credit for the amount in subscriptions. By a law of the Institution no change in the general laws can be made

un tass a written notice of the intended alterati oa has been stuck up in the library for three months previous. This law in the pr< isent case had not been complied with, as th< i notices were pasted up only on the 4th of May. Mr. F. D. Bell proposed that the law referred to should be suspended, that the pr< iposed alterations might be at once discussed. He contended that such a course yra s in strict accordance with the usages of all similar societies, and was resorted to for th< s purpose of facilitating business. Mr. Dillon and Mr. Domett spoke on th ' same side. Mr. Macskane (who held the proxies of se 1 reral absent members), strongly opposed su:h a proceeding. The law referred to we s framed to give stability to the Institution, and it could not be suddenly abroga ;ed as now proposed without producing mi ichief. The President was of opinion that the lav? in question was a complete bar to Mr. Bejil's proposal. Until that law was set aside in the prescribed manner, members must be content to abide by its provisions. The question was then put to the meeting and the motion lost. The following officers were then elected for the ensuing year : — President, Mr. Fox ; Vi<:e President, Mr. Domett; Committee, Messrs. Carkeek, Sclanders, Elliott, Saxton, Macshane, and Sweet ; Treasurer, Mr. Saxtoij; Secretary, Mr. F. D. Bell. The committee was requested to call a general meeting on the 6th of August, that the proposed alterations in the law for the admission of members might be then considered.
