ASSOCIATION OF ORIGINAL LANDHOLDERS.
A meeting of about fifteen or twenty of the original landholders of this settlement took place on Tuesday last, at the British and Foreign School. Mr. Valle*, on being elected to the chair, briefly stated the object of the meeting, which was to form an association for the protection of their mutual interests.
Mr. Beit moved the first resolution, which was to the effect that such an association was expedient, and that the gentlemen present should "enrol their names as members. Mr. Beit enumerated several subjects which required the immediate consideration of the original landholders, such as the present employment of labour in the colony, the postponement of the distribution of rural lands, and some arrangement by which nothing but good land should be offered for selection.
Seconded by Mr. Fisher. Mr. Sclanders moved as an amendment that instead of the association consisting only of the original landholders, it should be open to all persons having any interest in the settlement. Seconded by Mr. Ottsrson. Mr. Tuckbtt, Mr. Budge, Mr. Beit, and a few other gentlemen, contended for limiting the Association to the original landholders. They had a common interest in which no other settlers partook. Other associations might very properly be formed with more extended objects, but it was the duty of the original landholders to look after their own peculiar concerns. On a division the amendment was lost, and the greater part of the gentlemen present enrolled their names as members.
The first meeting of the Association, as will be seen by advertisement, takes place on Wednesday next. _
