To the Editor of the Nelson Examiner.

Sir — I beg to avail myself of your columns to state that my signature to a document expressing confidence in the present Auckland Government was obtained under the impression (derived from a hurried perusal and the statements of those who handed it about for eignature) that it was merely a complimentary address to Captain Fitzroy. I had not the faintest idea that it was intended to express approbation of the unnatural conduct of our do-nothing Government in relation to the late massacre, and consequently disapprobation of the steps taken by our much-respected local magistrates, whose vigorous exertions for our safety must ever claim the gratitude of such of their fellowsettlers whose minds are not wholly engrossed in toad-eating and place-hunting. I remain, sir, Your most obedient servant, Nelson, Oct 30. A Settler.
