PORT NICHOLSON.
' By some extraordinary" neglect, we have Hot received our Wellington "papers either by the Brougham or the Sisters. We are indebted to the kindness of a friend for a file which extends to the 9th instant.
We observe that the negotiation for the settlement of the Land Claims in the district of Port Nicholson is , again broken off, and Mr. Spain has sailed for Auckland. The brig Nelson has not; y&t sailed for England, but is expected to do so very shortly. Sir £. Home, the commander of the North Star, had his scull nearly fractured by the falling of a boom, in going into Wellington. We are happy to find that he is fast recovering. The Proclamation continues to work mischief. At the Manawatu the natives have been robbing Mr. Kebbell, taking away the lead from his saw-mill to cast bullets. '•
At port Nicholson a Maori entered the house of a woman named Cameron, and took a piece of print from a box. On being remonstrated •with, he struck the woman violently, and, with the assistance of others, seriously injured a constable who sought to apprehend him., On bringing the case before the Police Magistrate, Mr. Clarke, the protector of aborigines, said it was only a. " trifling affair," and the Maori, was dismissed. . . .
A ton of flax, sent by the Sisters to Hobart Town, sold readily for £26. •
