M'Donald, Treasurer. *A T a PUBLIC MEETING of the InLJI habitants of Nelson, held at the Court House, on Wednesday, the 18th of January, to consider the propriety of . holding an Anniversary Fete, in commemoration of the first settlers landing at Nelson, on February 1,*1843, H. A. Thompson, Esq:, in the chair, Resolved;' that the following gentlemen be appointed a Committee to make the necessary arrangements: — Messrs. Wakefield, Thompson, Richardson, M'Donald, Sclanders, Poynter, Empson, Leighton, Cautley, Greaves, Fell, Mills. Macfarlane. Hoare, Ross, and King. At a meeting of the Committee, held at the Literary Institution, on Thursday, the 19th of January, Mr. M'Donald in the chair, the following gentlemen were added to the Committee :— Messrs. Dillon, Duppa, 'Tytler, England, Monro, Thorns, Carkeek, Otterson, Howard, Wallace, Mtcshane, Patchett, aud Schroder. - - ■ Resolved, that every member of the Committee be requested to collect subscriptions in his own district, and that a meeting be held daily at the Institution, at twelve o'clock, to report progress. At a meeting of the Committee, held at the Institution, on Friday, the 20th of January, the treasurer reported forty-seven pounds in hand. The following programme was then agreed to, but subject to such alterations as may hereafter be determined on : — Sailing Mateh — By all sailing boats. Three to start, or no race. Entrance, 10s. Prise, £7 7s. Rowing Match. — By all butts not exceeding five oar*. Three to start, or no race. Entrance, 7*. 6d. Price, £& ss, * Sculling Match. — By all boat*. Two to start, or no race. Entrance, 2s. 6d. Prise, £1 Is. Canoe Race.— By_ canoes, pulled by natives. Two to start, or no race. Price, £6 6s. Second Race. — Small canoes, by natives. Price, £l If. Hukdle Race. — Three horses to start, or no race. Heat*. Entrance, £1 Is. Price, £5 ss. The last horse to pay the second horse's stakes. Wheblbabxow Race. — Entrance, Is. Price, £1 is. Jumping in Sacks. — Price, £l is. Climbing a Geeasi Pole. — Price, a quarter of mutton. Catching a SoAped-tail Pig.— Prize, the pig. Two pigs will be run for. Rifle Match. — Distance, one hundred yards. Entrance, ss. Prize, £% 2s. Foot Race. — Distance, one mile. Entrance, 3s. 6d. Prise, £2 2s. Vegetable Show.— To be arranged at the Institution, the best sheaves of wheat, barley, and oats ; the finest cauliflower, cabbage, turnips, potatoes, green pease, French beans, and nosegay. Price. £5 55., the distribution to be left to the Committee. Ploughing Match.— Two to start. Prize, £6 ss, Second Match. — Price, £3 12s. Hewling's (Mr.) Pxtzx.— The best preparation of Flax , both as to quantity and time. First, £l is. ; second and third, 10s. 6d. each. In the evening, a Dance will take place on the Cricket ground, and Tea and Cake provided for all. All persons desirous of contending for the various prizes> are requested to enter their names at the Institution, where the Committee meet daily at twelve o'clock; on or before Monday, the 30th instant.
