SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
By the Adelaide papers to the sth July, we learn that the monetary affairs of that colony remain in the same distressing state that they have been in for the last two years. An act for the regulation of colonial distillation was passed, fixing the duty on colonial spirits at eight shillings a gallon, the same rat" * that is levied upon foreign spirits imported W This act was violently opposed when passing through the Council. The municipal corporation did not appear to be giving very great satisfaction, the town council occupying a considerable portion of its time in quarrelling.
The Syrian Warfare. — The Gorgon has brought home 11,000 medals from the Turkish government, to be distributed among the officers, seamen, and marines engaged in the Syrian warfare. The medals are of different sorts, according to the various ranks of the parties for whom they are intended. Those for Sir R. . Stopford, Sir C. Napier, &c, are gold, and set ' round with diamonds; the others are gold, silver, and bronze.
