H. Augustus Thompson, Esq., in" the Chair, the following resolutions were passed : — 1. Moved by Mr. W.C.You jig; seconded by Mr. Tockctt : That this meeting having learned with rrcrret that tin article in the Nelson Examiner on the subject of establishing schools has been so much misapprehended a* to have led to an erroneous impression that there is a fund appropriated by the New Zealand Company for. the purpose of providing institutions for elementary instruction, whereas the sum ofjtf 15,000 set apart for the advancement of education is to be exclusively applied to the endowment of a future college ; and inasmuch as no provision has yet been made for elementary education in this settlement, this meeting is of opinion that it is incumbent on the colonists themselves to make the most vigorous exertions, with a view to effecting an immediate provision for that purpose. 3. Moved by Mr. Rich aidson ; seconded by Mr. Jolmk : That a Building Committee be now appointed, consisting of the following individuals : — Captain England, J^P. I Mr. Macrae Mr. Macihane I Mr. Tuckett and that they be empowered to commence the erection of a School-house as soon a* it shall appear to them that they are in the receipt of sufficient funds for that purpose. It was subsequently moved by Mr. Young, and seconded by Mr. K.cita, That a committee be now appointed for the purpose of preparing a memorial to the New Zealand Company, setting forth that a portion of the College fund should be appropriated to the establishment of elementary schools in in this settlement ; that, when such memorial shall be prepared, a meeting shall be convened to consider trie expediency of its adoption ; and that, if adopted. Captain Wakefield be requested to transmit the same, without delay, to the Court of Directors of the New Zealand Company. (signed) H. Augustus Tbohpsok, Chairman.
