THE EDITOR'S PORTFOLIO.

We propose from tins time to appropriate the two or three last columns of our paper to extracts From works of acknowledged literary and scientific merit. We do not wish to tie ourselves down to any particular mode of proceeding with regard to these extracts. It is possible that [at times we may continue in a series of numbers to give the whole of an essay on any subject, popular information with regard to which may appear to be useful and interesting. We have observed that colonial editors in genera] are frequently induced to fill up the : r columns with. stale jokes or American go-a-headisms, when the want of local matter of interest, and a delay in the arrival of newspapers, has reduced their required amount of material for concocting a full sheet ; and we think that the plan we now propose to adopt will be preferred by our readers, as well as more satisfactory to ourselves. We do not repudiate the insertion of original communications in these columns ; on the contrary, we shall be glad at all times to make our pages the means of communicating any scientific) or generally useful information which may be contributed by the pens of our fellow colonists ; especially any which may derive a local interest from their connection with the natural productions of New Zealand, the manners of its aboriginal inhabitants, or the history of its discovery.
